QUEEN'S 25, WESTERN 48
GAELS DROP 48-25 DECISION TO RIVAL NO. 3 MUSTANGS IN LONDON
The Queen's Gaels (2-2) were in London on Saturday afternoon to take on their rival No.3 Western Mustangs (4-0). Nate Hobbs (Mississauga, Ont.) finished with three touchdowns on 336 yards passing while adding another 62 yards on the ground but the Gaels were upended 48-25.
The weather conditions played a factor in the game early for both teams as it was a windy, rainy start to the game. Western marched up field on Queen's early but a rush by Alex Taylor resulted in a fumble that was recovered by Nicholas Dowd (Gananoque, Ont.). As the Gaels took over it was Jesse Andrews (Arnprior, Ont.) with a 34-yard rush to start the Gaels off getting them into Mustang territory. The Gaels set-up a 30-yard field goal attempt from Dillon Wamsley (London, Ont.) but he missed and the ball went out of the endzone giving Queen's one point.
Western quickly responded taking advantage of a fumbled return attempt by the Gaels that the Mustangs recovered. Starting at the Gaels 45 it took only three plays before Taylor found his way into the endzone on a 6-yard rush putting Western out in front 7-1. Western soon after conceded a safety to give the Gaels three points on the afternoon. With Hobbs under centre he missed a receiver and Western corner Christiaan Collarile intercepted the pass and went all the way to the endzone for a 63-yard touchdown to give Western a 14-3 lead.
After 10 points to open the second quarter for Western, Queen's was finally able to get their first score on the afternoon. After Hobbs found Matteo Del Brocco (Leamington, Ont.) for an 18-yard reception into Mustang territory he followed with a 41-yard touchdown pass to Curtis Carmichel (Scarborough, Ont.) who battled a defender in the air before hauling down the score.
Trailing 31-11 heading into the final quarter Queen's continued to move the ball well on offence and once again it was the Hobbs to Carmichael combination that came through for the Gaels. Andrews opened the fourth with a 25-yard rush and Hobbs hit an open Rudy Uhl (North Vancouver, B.C.) for another 33-yards setting up an easy 13-yard score for Carmichael.
The Mustangs managed to pull away from there with two straight rushing scores, first a two-yard score from Yannick Harou followed a few minutes later by a one-yard score from Taylor.
Queen's tacked on one more score in the fourth but the Mustangs finished with a 48-25 victory.
