GAELS 58, VARSITY BLUES 14
As expected, Queen’s offence rolled up mega-points in their 58-14 romp over the Varsity Blues. Danny Brannagan was good on 13 of 22 passes for 241 yards and three touchdowns, 2 to Scott Valberg and one to Mike Giffin. Jansen Shrubb entered the game in the 4th quarter and was good on 6 0f 8, 111 yards and one TD to Tim Poffley. The receiver of the day was Blaise Morrison who had 6 receptions for 121 yards, although Scott Valberg had the most efficient day, catching only 2 passes, but scoring on both.
The country’s leading rusher Mike Giffin ran for another 215 yards, 207 of them in the first half alone. Danny Brannagan had 29 yards and 2 rushing TD’s and Marty Gordon chipped in with another 37 yards.
The Gaels had a total of 609 yards of net offence, compared to Toronto’s 251. On the down side, the Gaels picked up where they left off against Laurier with 2 interceptions and 2 fumbles, a number of catches were dropped, and Brannagan was sacked 4 times.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Blues QB’s were good on 21 of 38 passes for 213 yards and one TD in the air. David Rooney had 7 total tackles, while Josh Sultana and Thaine Carter had 6 each. Sacks were recorded by Rooney, Carter, Dee Sterling and Neil Puffer. The defence also forced the Blues into one conceded safety. The balance of the scoring was delivered by Dan Village’s 7 converts.
Next week, the 4-0, No. 4 Gaels host the No. 2, 4-0 Western Mustangs in the Homecoming game. The Stangs are coming off a 71-0 win over the hapless and winless York Lions and were the 2007 Yates Cup champions after an upset victory over Queen’s in the first round of the playoffs. The Gaels have all the motivation they need to come up big in a win in front of the Homecoming crowd.
