The Gaels fell 43-24 to the McMaster Marauders in a third straight error-filled game, punctuated by untimely penalties, and execution lapses on both offense and defense. We suspect the video review will not be a pretty sight.
Queen's scoring came from a 33-yard field goal by Ryan Elger in the 1st quarter and a 10-yard fumble-recovery for a TD by Michael Patone to Ian Hazlett midway through the second quarter to bring the Gaels to a 14-10 deficit. A 4-yard TD pass to Dave Weese in the third quarter brought the Gaels within 6 points (23-17), but by the time Rob Bagg sped 63 yards for a TD on a punt return near the end of the game, Queen's was well behind.
The offensive stars of the game for Queen's were Brad Smith with 10 receptions for 147 yards and Marty Gordon in his first start who ran for 123 yards on 15 carries. QB Danny Brannagan threw for 135 yards (15 of 29) and one TD, but had 3 picks. Ali Clarkson - who proved to be a (Mac) crowd favourite - entered the game in the late minutes and was 3 of 4 for 58 yards. Both quarterbacks were under heavy pressure from the Marauders who recorded 5 sacks.
On defense, the Gaels allowed Jon Behie, starting only his 2nd game of 2005 in place of Adam Archibald, to complete 18 of 29 for 304 yards and 3 TD's and rush for an extra TD. Mac's feature back Jordan Kozina ran for 150 yards on 20 carries and one TD. Ian Hazlett was the leading tackler with 7 solo tackles (plus his TD), Kirby Calvert had 6 and Ryan Bechmanis had 5 while Michael Patone had 4 tackles and 2 fumble reciveries, and DJ Mulholland had 4 solo tackles and a sack.
Next up are the 2-3 Waterloo Warriors in Waterloo on Thanksgiving Saturday.
