Queen's was represented at this year's showcase by Frank Pankewich (#41), Derek Morris (#65), and Johnny Aprile (#83), who suited up for the East Team.
Pankewich, a member of the Gaels defensive line, has been one of Queen's most consistent defensive players over the past two years. As a rookie in 2009, the electrical engineering major played a major role in the Gaels run to their fourth Vanier Cup title. Pankewich recorded 20 tackles, two sacks and recorded his first career interception in the Gaels victory over Western in the Yates Cup. This season, Pankewich led the team in sacks with six and finished second on the Gaels in total tackles with 38, including a team-best 13 tackles for a loss.
Morris, 6'4”, 300lbs., offensive lineman, saw his playing time in 2010 limited due to injury after starting all 12 games at right tackle in 2009. The kinesiology major started Queen's opening game against McMaster before dressing as a backup in each of the Gaels final three games, including their playoff matchup against the Marauders.
Aprile managed to crack the Gaels starting roster in 2010 and demonstrated his skills as a receiver right from the opening game. The physical and health education major finished second on the team in both receptions (34) and receiving yards (476). In Week 5, Aprile was named the OUA Offensive Player of the Week after recording seven receptions for 179 yards and a touchdown against Ottawa.
Joining the three players will be Queen's newly-appointed Special Teams Coordinator and Defensive Backs Coach Ryan Bechmanis. Bechmanis will be serving as the Special Teams Coordinator for the East Team, the second consecutive year that he has held a role with the East Team.
Geals trying out for the senior team were Adam Ross, Dan Village,Dan Bederman, and Dave Rooney (on his honeymoon) who are hoping to join Thaine Carter and Scott Valberg and Coach Pat Tracey on Canada's team playing in Austria in July. Will they ever forget the day they wore Western Mustang jerseys at TD Waterhouse?
