The Queen's Golden Gaels advanced to the OUA quarter-final playoffs (for the first time in three years) with a 28-9 win over the Western Mustangs. The Gaels were trailing 2-1 early in the game after a quarter scoring a rouge and then conceding a safety. For the next two quarters it was all Queen's as they got two Ryan Elger field goals from 30 and 33 yards out to lead 7-2. Running back Billy Burke scored on a 1 yard touchdown run with ninety seconds left in the first half to send the Gaels into the dressing room leading 14-2. The only scoring in the third quarter came on a 23 yard touchdown pass from Queen's QB Danny Brannagan to Rob Bagg to make it 21-2. The Mustangs got into the endzone for the first time early in the fourth quarter on a 38 yard run by DJ Bennett to make it 21-9. However, on the Gaels ensuing possession Brannagan and Brad Smith hooked up on a 71 yard touchdown pass to restore their 19 point lead and finish the scoring.
Danny Brannagan was good on 13 of 23 passes for 294 yards, 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. His key targets were Brad Smith with 3 catches for 104 yards and a touchdown, and Rob Bagg with 7 receptions for 83 yards and a touchdown. Scott Stinson had one reception, but it went for 74 yards. Queen's running back Mike Giffin had his second straight 100 yard rushing game with 31 carries for 149 yards.
The Gaels defense played an outstanding game - stopping Western's attack on many occasions. The Mustang QB's were good on 17 of 41 for only 266 yards, 1 TD and 4 picks.
The win gives Queen's a 4-4 mark and the sixth and final playoff berth. The Gaels will travel to Hamilton to play McMaster at Ivor Wynne Stadium on October 28.
Prior to the game, the 1956 Queen's Yates Cup champions were honoured, as was Dr. David Walker, the Dean of Health Sciences, who is retiring as a team physician but who hopes to still get a free pass onto the sidelines. Western Head Coach Larry Haylor was also honoured by the Queen's Football Club to mark his last regular season game prior to retirement; making the presentation was former Gaels Head Coach Doug Hargreaves.
